Gideon Paull

Biography

Gideon Paull writes fiction and nonfiction that take ordinary life seriously — the marriages that strain and hold, the faith that flickers and returns, the person who shows up at exactly the right moment and changes everything.

His debut novel The Held Breath follows a marriage over two decades, tracing the gap between the life a couple builds together and the lives they can never quite share with each other. Precise, quiet, and unexpectedly devastating, it has been compared to the work of Ian McEwan and Elizabeth Strout.

The Soul Framework — his work of nonfiction — maps the two souls inside every human being across the major spiritual traditions. Drawing on the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Quran, Kabbalah, Sufi mysticism, and modern psychology, it offers a new way to understand love, sin, and the persistent human longing for God.

His forthcoming novel Holloway is the story of Christine Holloway: a girl who crosses a continent alone at fifteen, survives the unsurvivable on the streets of Los Angeles, and spends the next thirty years building — first walls, then a company, then, slowly, a life. It is a novel about the cost of what we build to protect ourselves, and the harder work of learning to come down from behind it.

Gideon lives and writes in California. He is at work on his next book.
